Understanding DDoS Mitigation

DDoS attack testing and comprehensive DDoS mitigation can be a daunting task. In order to truly understand the effectiveness of your mitigation fabric, you need two things: All of the instrumentation necessary to observe how a mitigation platform behaves in real-time against real-world threats; and A next generation testing platform that provides the flexibility and accuracy needed to quantify results. Let’s use an e-commerce site for example. Nearly every e-commerce site has an “Add to Cart” button. If a DDoS attacker could script a thousand bots (some botnets have over a million bots) to simulate clicking on that “Add to Cart” button and generate more traffic than the site could handle, legitimate shoppers would have no chance of getting their click in. The key to fighting a complex attack like this is being able to differentiate a real shopper from a bot so the website can service one and ignore the other. More Info:  ddos atack

Stopping a DDoS Attack

A DDoS attack isn’t the same thing as hacking, although the two can be linked; the perpetrators aren’t attempting to access your website’s files or admin, but instead, they cause it to crash or become vulnerable due to the volume of requests. In some cases, this will be followed by attempts to hack the site when it’s vulnerable, but in the majority of cases, the aim is simply to make the site stop working. It may sound as if there isn’t any way to avoid a DDoS attack: after all, if someone decides to flood your site with requests, there isn’t much you can do to stop them. After seeing the increase, it was a matter of checking the server logs to investigate what was happening. These types of things can easily spin out of control. The past 7 days showed that the site’s /account/ page had been  requested 5,110,00 times  and produced a total of 66 GB of traffic. That is from a site that typically generates a little over 1 GB of total data in an entire month. So instantly we ...
