5G technology breakthrough for the automotive industry

The 5G network (fifth generation telecommunications network) is a new, intensively developed telecommunications standard. It is to enable fifty- or even a hundred-fold increase in transmission speed compared to current 4G networks. Such technology is to accelerate, among others development of the Internet of Things (IoT), telemedicine services, autonomous vehicles and smart cities.

"I am very excited about 5G technology from both the customer and industry perspective. Covering the most important roads with a high-bandwidth telecommunications network will open up completely new possibilities for us. Imagine driving a car from Stuttgart to Berlin while running a business conference call at the same time. you will be able to watch a few episodes of your favorite series on Netfliks. This technology opens up huge opportunities and allows the launch of new services in cars, currently available in very limited versions, "explained Kaellenius at a meeting with journalists at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA).

"Importantly, autonomous driving technology will require very fast data transmission to cloud services. This will provide many benefits, even if self-propelled cars can cope with difficult situations on their own and without internet connection. That's why I see only the pros of implementing 5G" - he assessed head of Daimler, to which the Mercedes brand belongs.

He also reminded that investments in the development of autonomous driving technology exceed billions of euros. That is why automotive companies are increasingly joining forces to carry out joint work and share costs. In early July, BMW and Daimler announced the finalization of an agreement on the development of autonomous driving technology. A team of 1.2 thousand will work on solutions. developers of both companies.
