Changes in Tech Require Changes in Training

There’s no doubt that AI puts certain jobs at risk, but the World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates in its “The Future of Jobs Report 2018” that while 75 million jobs may be displaced, 133 million jobs may emerge as humans and machines work together in the future. Panelists discussed how as jobs are redefined and new occupations are created, it’s critical for current workers to re-skill and diversify their talent to seize new opportunities in the workplace. Additionally, schools must ensure their courses align with what the future of the industry – and the world – will look like so they can prepare students to thrive in a 21st Century workforce. For Government, Coordination is Key It can be hard to keep up with rapid changes in AI technology, which is why panelists discussed the critical need for coordination between government agencies. As policymakers explore ways to promote technologies such as autonomous vehicles, it’s paramount to be mindful of safety implications and resist over-...

A Value That Just Keeps Growing

Right out of active service Nightengale was stepping into one contracting role, then another, at Fort Knox. His combination of a military background, hands-on tech experience and IT certifications gave him a perennial leg up as moved through the employment ranks. “I’ve never had a situation where I’ve been unemployed, trying to find a job,” Nightengale said. “I think having certifications allowed me to do that a lot better than not having them would have.” And it was with an equal combination of dedication and certification that he was able to pivot into project management. In 2014, Nightengale got his Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and began working on contracts in that capacity. In all these sectors, innovative technologies will increase efficiencies and effectiveness within existing infrastructure and set the foundation for future innovation and advancement. Because of that, CompTIA staff and members told lawmakers that any infrastructure package should includ...

Making the Case for Cybersecurity Certifications

While organizations are aware of the risks of the security skills gap, convincing your boss to pay for a cybersecurity certification can be less simple. As noted in the 2018 Trends in Cybersecurity: Building Effective Security Teams report, 78 percent of firms with internal skill rely on third-party security organizations, even though the majority feel this solution is too expensive. Even with a lack of cybersecurity skill at your organization, you could still face barriers to receiving support. To get financial backing for your professional development goals, you may need to make a clear case for the value of cybersecurity certifications. Computer technology brings about a whole new field of ethical dilemmas. From computer crime to privacy to the power of computer professionals, this technology has shifted the way the business world must think about ethical decisions. Yet this is difficult because there is no overarching positive ethical force in the American business community. Comb...

Emerging technologies will work together to change the concepts of computing.

For example, the internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) will work together to enable ambient computing, where the environment reacts based on context. Think of smart lighting. It starts as a basic IoT solution, where lighting is connected to a network and can be controlled by an app. The next step is to manually build an automated schedule. True ambient computing is where the lighting system activates automatically when it senses behavior (like entering or exiting) and learns from that behavior to optimize the schedule or lighting quality. CompTIA A+ can help IT pros with device management, and CompTIA Linux+ can help with automating processes. Does this IT certification align with my career goals? I’ve spoken with hundreds, if not thousands, of people via YouTube, and it always burdens me to hear someone chasing certifications that do not align with their career goals. Certifications require time, money and energy, and none of those should ever be wasted. CompTIA’s...

CompTIA IT Pro: How did the practice of DevSecOps begin

Let’s start with a trip in the 'Wayback Machine' to look at a more traditional way of how IT teams work within companies: Developers code and IT pros manage infrastructure or operations. Traditionally, they are isolated from each other because they have different interests and priorities. Here’s how this works in practice: A developer will develop code on a test server. Once the development cycle is finished, the developer drops it onto an infrastructure server, and everyone expects it to work. But then testing doesn’t go well because the environment has changed during the development phase, so the developer has to reassess and make adjustments. DevOps is when you put these two functions together. Instead of developing in isolation, developers and infrastructure pros test code at various interface points along the way, so they don’t have to completely start from scratch. Management, developers and operations are all looking at the same scoreboard, all progressing toward the sa...

The Path to Modern DevSecOps

We’ve made exponential leaps with technology, yet with all the changes come security risks as we create the applications that run these systems. Organizations should be living DevSecOps, but many have lagged behind in adopting it due to a lack of talented IT professionals. DevSecOps improves on Agile by focusing on people over processes and tools, modernizing the software delivery pipeline by integrating security into the full lifecycle of application development. In the past, security was isolated to a specific role or team member. Today, the collaborative DevSecOps framework effectively integrates security practices as shared responsibility from end-to-end. Hear from Laszlo S. Gonc, CISSP, on the following topics: Find out what is DevSecOps and why it matters. Understand what skills are required to be a DevSecOps engineer. Nailing Your First IT Interview

Jordan first posted about his interview on Reddit. We loved his story so much, we had to share it! We spoke with Jordan to learn more about how he uses CompTIA certs in his job interview strategy. Jordan Grening was always anxious before job interviews — “I notoriously short circuit” is how he put it — so he started experimenting with his interview techniques to gain power in the game. “I wanted to get to the point where I don’t feel anxiety in an interview setting anymore,” he said. “That’s really where the strategy has come from, having failures and learning from those failures and wanting to succeed.” As he practiced for interviews and developed his skills, Grening earned his CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ certifications. Recently, he nailed a job interview for an IT support job with a local government agency and its connected sites. He hopes that sharing what he learned about job interviews will help others who feel anxiety or are stepping into IT for the first...
